What to Eat to Get Your Period Back

Jun 28, 2023 | Blog, Tips & Tricks for Recovery

If your period has gone missing due to stress, over-exercising, or under-eating, you might be wondering what it actually takes to bring it back. You’re likely also wondering whether food alone can make a difference.

The short answer? Yes.
Getting your period back starts with learning what to eat to get your period back so your body feels safe to ovulate again.

In this post, we’ll cover the foods, nutrients, and habits that help restore hormonal balance, support ovulation, and bring your natural cycle back — without obsessing over calories or restriction.

Understanding Hypothalamic Amenorrhea (HA)

Hypothalamic Amenorrhea (HA) is when your menstrual cycle stops because your brain isn’t receiving enough energy to support reproduction. This often happens from a combination of restrictive eating, excessive exercise, and stress.

When the body senses an energy shortage, it lowers reproductive hormones like estrogen and progesterone while raising cortisol (your stress hormone). The good news? You can reverse this signal with proper nutrition and nervous system regulation.

Nutrition and consistent fueling tell your body that it’s safe again, helping re-activate the communication between your brain and ovaries that drives ovulation and your menstrual cycle.

1. Eat Enough to Signal Safety

Before you worry about specific foods, your first focus should be eating enough overall calories.

When calories are too low, your body interprets that as danger and suppresses non-essential systems like fertility (1). Many women recovering from HA have low estrogen, low/normal FSH and LH, and high cortisol, all of which can improve once adequate energy is restored.

Aim for three balanced meals and three snacks daily, each including carbohydrates, protein, and fat. This consistency keeps blood sugar stable and reassures your body it’s no longer in a famine state.

2. Prioritize Carbohydrates

Carbs are the single most important macronutrient for restoring your period and optimizing your fertility. Glucose (the fuel your brain gets from carbs) is required for the release of FSH and LH, two hormones needed to trigger ovulation (2).

Best carbohydrates to eat to get your period back:

  • Complex carbs: oats, quinoa, potatoes, fruit, beans, brown rice
  • Lower-fiber carbs: white rice, bagels, crackers, pancakes, tortillas

A mix of both helps your body recover without overwhelming digestion. Remember, carbs don’t derail hormone health — they drive it.

3. Embrace Healthy Fats

Healthy fats are essential for producing hormones like estrogen and progesterone (3). Without enough fat, your body can’t make or regulate these reproductive hormones.

Healthy fats to include daily

  • Avocados and olive oil
  • Nuts and seeds
  • Full-fat dairy (if possible)
  • Fatty fish such as wild caught salmon, tuna, mackerel, or sardines

These fats also help regulate blood sugar, increase satiety, and improve nutrient absorption, which are all crucial for cycle recovery and optimal fertility.

4. Support Your Body With Micronutrients

Vitamins and minerals fine-tune hormone balance, energy production, and ovulation. Most of the clients we work with inside the Food Freedom Fertility Society are pretty depleted on adequate minerals due to restrictive eating and over training.

Key micronutrients for period recovery:

  • Iron: beef, poultry, lentils, spinach
  • Calcium: dairy products or fortified plant milks
  • Vitamin D: salmon, eggs, fortified foods, and sunlight exposure
  • B vitamins: eggs, leafy greens, and whole grains

If you’re trying to get pregnant, ask your provider to check your vitamin D levels. Levels below 30 ng/mL has been associated with fertility challenges (4), and guided supplementation can make a big difference.

5. Break Food Rules and Rebuild Trust

Many women struggling with HA also struggle with food rules, like avoiding carbs, tracking macros, or avoiding “off-limits” foods. Restrictive eating patterns are strongly linked to persistent hormone imbalances even after weight restoration (5).

But full recovery requires more than adding calories; it means letting go of restriction and healing your relationship with food.

The Food Freedom Fertility Method™ helps women reconnect with hunger cues, challenge fear foods, and learn to eat without guilt. When you stop restricting and start nourishing, your body finally feels safe to ovulate and cycle naturally again.
