When you’re working on period recovery, it can be hard to know if what you’re doing is actually working.
You may be eating more, exercising less, gaining weight, and trying to trust the process but still wondering:
- Am I doing enough?
- Is my body responding?
- How do I know if my period is actually coming back?
Period recovery can feel frustrating because your body does not always give you instant confirmation. You may not get your period back right away, but that does not mean nothing is happening.
Period Recovery Does Not Look the Same for Everyone
Before getting into the signs, I want to remind you that everybody is different.
Some women may experience all of these signs before getting their period back. Others may only notice one or two. Some signs may come and go before the body is fully ready to ovulate again.
If you are recovering from hypothalamic amenorrhea, your body often needs consistent nourishment, less intense exercise, enough rest, and time to feel safe again.
These signs are simply feedback that your body may be moving in the right direction.
1. Increased Hunger
One of the first signs many women notice in period recovery is increased hunger.
This can feel confusing, especially if you spent a long time not feeling very hungry. But when your body has been underfed, it often adapts by suppressing hunger cues and slowing down certain functions to conserve energy.
As you start eating more, your metabolism may begin to increase, digestion may improve, and hunger cues may come back online.
This is a good sign.
Increased hunger does not mean you are doing something wrong. It often means your body is beginning to trust that more food is available.
If you’re unsure what enough food looks like, this guide on what to eat to get your period back is a helpful place to start.
2. Feeling Warmer
Another common sign that your body may be recovering is feeling warmer.
Many women with hypothalamic amenorrhea notice they run cold. They may have cold hands and feet, need extra layers, or feel chilly even when others are comfortable.
This can happen because the body is trying to conserve energy.
As you begin eating enough and resting more, your body may start turning important systems back on. One sign of this is feeling warmer.
You may notice:
- Warmer hands and feet
- Less sensitivity to cold
- Feeling warmer at night
- Needing fewer layers
- A higher waking body temperature
A warmer body can be a sign that your metabolism is recovering and your body is no longer operating in such a low-energy state.
3. Increased Cervical Mucus
Cervical mucus is one of the most helpful signs that your hormones may be shifting in the right direction.
When estrogen begins to rise, cervical mucus usually increases. This matters because estrogen is one of the first hormones that rises as your body prepares to ovulate.
You may notice cervical mucus that is:
- Sticky
- Creamy
- Watery
- Slippery or egg-white
Egg-white cervical mucus is often associated with the fertile window. It usually looks clear, stretchy, and slippery.
If you’re seeing this type of cervical mucus, it may mean your body is getting close to ovulating.
It’s also important to know that cervical mucus can come and go. Sometimes your body may try to ovulate, but not fully get there yet. That does not mean you failed. It often means your body is trying and may need more consistency with food, rest, and reduced exercise.
4. Increased Libido
Another sign that your hormones may be coming back online is an increase in libido or sex drive.
When the body is preparing to ovulate, reproductive hormones begin to rise. Estrogen, LH, FSH, and testosterone can all play a role in libido.
Many women with period loss experience low sex drive because reproductive hormones are suppressed. So if you begin noticing more interest in sex, this may be a sign that your hormones are shifting and your body is moving closer to ovulation.
This is not something everyone will notice clearly, and libido can be affected by many factors, including stress, sleep, relationships, body image, and mental health.
But in the context of period recovery, it can be a positive sign.
5. Hormonal Acne or Breast Tenderness
As you get closer to ovulation or after ovulation occurs, you may notice symptoms that feel similar to PMS.
Two common signs include:
- Hormonal acne
- Breast tenderness
Hormonal acne may show up around the chin or jawline. Breast tenderness may happen due to shifts in estrogen and progesterone.
These symptoms can be frustrating, but in period recovery, they may be signs that your body is cycling again.
This does not always mean your period will arrive immediately, but it can be a clue that your body is moving through hormonal changes again.
What If You Only Have One or Two Signs?
You do not need to have every sign for recovery to be working.
Some women notice hunger first. Others notice cervical mucus. Some feel warmer but do not see other changes right away.
Recovery is not always linear.
However, if months are passing and you are only seeing minimal signs, it may mean your body still needs more support.
That could look like:
- Eating more overall
- Adding more carbohydrates
- Reducing exercise further
- Taking more rest days
- Gaining more weight
- Reducing stress
- Letting go of food rules
This is where working with a Period Recovery Dietitian can help you understand what your body still needs.
How Long Does It Take to Get Your Period Back?
One of the hardest parts of period recovery is not knowing exactly when your period will return.
For some women, it can take a few months of consistent recovery changes. For others, it may take longer, especially if there is still underfueling, high stress, overexercise, or fear around weight gain.
The goal is not to do the bare minimum to get a bleed.
The goal is to create an environment where your body feels safe enough to ovulate consistently.

Seeing Signs that Your Period is Coming Back?
If you are seeing signs that your period may be coming back, that is something to celebrate.
Increased hunger, feeling warmer, cervical mucus, increased libido, hormonal acne, and breast tenderness can all be signs that your body is responding to recovery.
But remember: you do not need to see every sign perfectly.
And if signs come and go, that does not mean you are failing.
It may simply mean your body needs more time, more food, more rest, or more consistency before it feels safe enough to ovulate.
Your body is not broken.
It is communicating with you.
And these signs may be evidence that you are moving in the right direction.
If you are trying to get your period back and feel unsure if you are doing enough, you do not have to figure it out alone.
