Signs you’re about to get your Period Back

Positive signs of period recovery

You’re eating more, you’re exercising less, and you’re finally healing your relationship with food. But one question still lingers:

“When will I get my period back?”

What many women don’t realize is that your period is the last step in the recovery process. Long before that first bleed, your body gives off powerful clues that your hormones are healing — we call these period recovery signs.

In this blog, we’re covering the subtle and not-so-subtle changes that happen first — especially the estrogen increase symptoms that show up as your body moves toward ovulation and, eventually, a healthy cycle. These signs mean your efforts are working — even if your period isn’t back yet.

How long does it take to get your period back?

Most women see their period return within 2–3 months of consistent fueling and rest — although some take longer, depending on how long they’ve been under eating or overexercising. Recovery times can vary, but this is a pretty good average we’ve observed in our clients.

Keep in mind: your period comes ~2 weeks after ovulation. That means the period recovery signs you see now — like changes in temperature, energy, and cervical mucus — are clues that you may be getting closer to having your period return.

5 Signs you’re about to get your Period Back

In working with close to 400 women on recovery from Hypothalamic Amenorrhea, we’ve got period recovery signs and symptoms down to science. So much so, that we can often tell when someone is about to get their period back before it happens.

There can be a lot of confusion in the waiting for that first period, but here are the most common things you can be on the lookout for as your hormones heal and your body gears up to ovulate and have that first recovery period.

1. Your Metabolism Revs Up

One of the first period recovery signs women notice is increased hunger and energy.

Why? Because your metabolism adapts to under-eating by slowing everything down. But when you eat more:

  • Hunger increases as a sign that your metabolism is ramping back up—your body now trusts that food is available and is ready to restart hormone production, which was previously shut down to conserve energy.
  • Digestion improves as your metabolism increases and your body finally has the energy, stomach acid, and minerals it needs—reminding us that sluggish digestion is often a symptom of stress and under-fueling, not eating more.
  • Thyroid function improves as your metabolism speeds up and your body becomes better nourished, helping restore optimal T3 levels and setting the stage for regular ovulation.

These are foundational signs your body is moving out of survival mode — long before your actual period arrives.

2. A Rise in Body Temperature

Tracking your basal body temperature (BBT) can be a tool to assess changes in recovery and confirm that ovulation has occurred.

  • In a low-energy state, your temperature may dip below 97°F (oral) or 96°F (skin)
  • With recovery, your temperature increases back to normal — often before you see any bleeding. This doesn’t necessarily mean you’ve ovulated if you haven’t seen any additional ovulation signs or symptoms, but it is a great sign your body is becoming more  nourished.
  • When you finally do ovulate, you’ll notice a ~0.5°F increase in body temperature from the first half of your cycle (the follicular phase) to the second half (the luteal phase). This happens due to the rise in progesterone that only occurs after ovulation.

3. Cervical Mucus Shifts (Estrogen Increase Symptom #1)

Cervical mucus (CM) is one of the clearest estrogen increase symptoms to watch for. As your estrogen rises, CM becomes more noticeable and changes in texture:

  • Sticky/tacky
  • Lotion-like
  • Watery
  • Egg-white (EWCM) — stretchy, slippery, and the most fertile type

Noticing an increase in EWCM is one of the best signs ovulation (and your period) may be coming soon.

4. Hormonal Acne (Estrogen Increase Symptom #2)

Hormonal acne — especially around your jawline or chin — can be frustrating, but it’s often a sign of hormonal shifts. During period recovery, rising testosterone and estrogen levels can trigger breakouts, especially before ovulation and/or right before your first recovery period.

While not the most exciting sign, acne is still one of the estrogen increase symptoms that means your body is coming back online.

5. Increased Libido (Estrogen Increase Symptom #3)

Feeling more interested in sex? That’s not random — it’s your hormones at work.

There is a surge in both estrogen and testosterone before ovulation leads to a natural rise in libido. This is a classic period recovery sign and aligns with the body’s biological drive to want to be intimate when your body is most fertile.

Ovulation and Beyond

When you’re doing all the right things — eating more, exercising less, and focusing on recovery — it’s natural to want results fast. But remember, your period is the final step in the process. Everyone’s recovery timelines look different and sometimes your mindset needs just as much attention and healing as your body.

Looking out for period recovery signs — from rising body temperature to improved digestion, CM changes, acne, and increased libido — is the best way to know your hormones are truly healing and your body is making strides towards that first recovery period.

Many of these are also estrogen increase symptoms, which signal that your body is getting closer to ovulation — remember estrogen plays a key role in priming the uterine lining for pregnancy and stimulating the growth and maturation of a follicle for ovulation. After ovulation, your period (or pregnancy) could be just around the corner!
