Weight gain is often vilified in our society.
So much so that we tend to automatically associate it with being unhealthy and undesirable.
So no wonder it's so hard for women with Hypothalamic Amenorrhea (HA) to accept the fact that you need to gain weight to be healthy and fertile!
But we’ve gotta work on flipping the script 📄

Unsure why your period is missing?
While Hypothalamic Amenorrhea (HA) and Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome (PCOS) are two very different conditions, clinically they can present similar which can make getting a proper diagnosis tricky.
With textbook HA, we are usually seeing
👉🏼 Low Estrogen
👉🏼 Low testosterone
👉🏼 Low FSH and LH
👉🏼 Low fasting glucose and insulin
With PCOS, we usually see the opposite but not always! It can get a bit murky looking at labs alone.
This is why it’s important to assess lifestyle factors as well. HA ladies are typically *very* active (think 5+ hours exercise per week) and often rather meticulous about what/how much they eat.
It’s also not uncommon for someone with HA to have gone through a period of extreme restriction or an eating disorder.
Even if you’re ED recovered, the trauma your body has been through may still leave with irregular cycles or amenorrhea.
The good news is: HA is 100% reversible through proper nutrition and lifestyle factors.

Trying to get pregnant but missing your period?
This can be a frustrating place to be! You're ready to "try" but without a cycle can't really start the process.
So what's next? You'll likely get a referral to a fertility clinic and might be told IVF is your best option for pregnancy.
Medically speaking, this isn't untrue. Lower levels of fertility treatment like ovulation induction aren't very successful in women with Hypothalamic Amenorrhea (HA).
But what's not offered up often in the fertility treatment setting is that idea that by getting your period back you can actually try naturally and may not need IVF!
✨ My top 3 tips as a fertility dietitian who has helped 200+ heal from HA and restore their fertility naturally:
1) Focus on re-nourishing your body with adequate calories, carbs, and nutrients through food
2) Limit unnecessary stressors by cutting down on exercise, healing from disordered eating habits, and finding healthy outlets to manage the things we cannot control (hint: exercise cannot be the *only* tool you have for stress management!)
3. Rest. This might be the easiest to prescribe and hardest to put into practice. Remember than when you lose your period with HA your body must recover from an injury in order to work properly again. And rest is exactly what your body needs.
