Healing hypothalamic amenorrhea is simple in theory, but not always easy in real life.
You know you need to eat more. You know you need to rest. You know exercise needs to change. But actually doing those things can bring up fear, doubt, body image struggles, and the feeling that everything you learned about health is being flipped upside down.
I had the pleasure of having Cynthia, also known as The Period Nutritionist, join me on my podcast. She shared her own HA recovery story and what she has learned from helping hundreds of women get their periods back.
The key realization for her was that recovery is not just about getting a bleed. It is about getting your life back.
Missing Your Period Is Not Normal
Many women are told that it is normal not to get a period after coming off the pill. While it can take some time for cycles to regulate, going months or years without a period deserves attention.
Cynthia shared that she knew something was not right after coming off birth control and not getting her period, but she was repeatedly reassured that it was fine.
This is so common. But a missing period is feedback from the body.
Your cycle is a sign of whether your body has enough energy, safety, and hormone signaling to ovulate.
Knowing What to Do Is Not the Same as Feeling Ready
For HA recovery, the core steps often include eating more, resting more, reducing exercise, and working on mindset.
But for many women, those steps feel terrifying. Especially for those who have food rules that have been engrained in them for years, or who worked really hard to look/feel the way they do.
Cynthia shared the same fears many women have:
- How much weight will I gain?
- Will I ever stop gaining weight?
- What will people think?
- Who am I without exercise?
- Am I really doing the right thing?
These fears are not shallow. They are part of the recovery process.
You may be able to change the behavior before your mind fully catches up. That is why support, community, and repetition matter so much (and why our FFF Program has a big emphasis on the group element)
The World Is Doing the Opposite of What You Need
One of the hardest parts of HA recovery is that the world around you may be encouraging the opposite of what your body needs.
You might be surrounded by messages about eating less, shrinking your body, getting toned, earning food, and never missing workouts.
But HA recovery asks you to move in a different direction.
It asks you to:
- Eat enough even when diet culture says to cut back
- Rest even when fitness culture says to push harder
- Add carbohydrates even when wellness culture says to avoid them
- Trust your body even when control feels safer
- Choose long-term health over short-term body manipulation
This is why the community is so powerful. You need a space where recovery is normalized, and people understand the journey you’re on..
What Holds Women Back From Getting Their Period Back?
There are several common barriers that keep women stuck in recovery.
1. Not Eating Enough
Many women increase their food but still are not eating enough for recovery. Eating more than before does not always mean eating enough.
HA recovery often requires consistent, intentional fueling that may be higher than what online calculators suggest.
2. Holding Onto Exercise
Exercise can be one of the hardest things to change, especially if it is part of your identity, stress relief, or body control.
But exercise is still stress on the body. If you are underfueled, even “healthy” movement can keep the body from feeling safe enough to ovulate.
You don’t have to stop exercise altogether, you just need to adapt to lighter movement that doesn’t cause additional stress on the body. If you’re a runner or someone who does a lot of HIIT, we recommend considering more yoga or Pilate, or even just walking.
3. Waiting for the Perfect Time
Many women delay recovery because they have a vacation, wedding, marathon, summer, or stressful season coming up.
But there will almost always be something.
If body image or fear of missing workouts is the reason you are waiting, the answer is usually to start now, even if you do not feel 100% ready.
4. Believing It Is Only Mental Stress
Mental stress can impact the cycle, but when periods are completely missing, there is often more going on.
Underfueling, exercise stress, and mental stress often stack on top of each other. Your body may not be reacting to one thing. It may be reacting to the total load.
Recovery Is Physical and Mental
Getting your period back requires physical changes, but full recovery also requires mental healing.
You may need to unlearn the belief that thin equals healthy, that food has to be earned, or that rest means failure.
You also need to rebuild body image, food flexibility, and trust in your own cues.
This part can take longer than the physical recovery, and that is okay.
Healing HA is not about doing recovery perfectly.
It is about giving your body enough food, enough rest, enough consistency, and enough support to feel safe again.
If your period is missing, your body is not betraying you. It is communicating with you.
Recovery may feel scary at first, but the payoff is bigger than a period. It is future health, fertility, freedom, and a life that is not controlled by food and exercise.
